About the Artists

Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar

Daughter and disciple of veteran vocalist Rajabhau Deo, Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar was also privileged to train with M. S. Kanetkar, a veteran of Jaipur gharana. As a result, her music reflects a confluence of three traditions: Gwalior, Jaipur and Kirana. Furthermore, her mastery over semi-classical repertoire of Purab tradition, and her academic proficiency to analyse and interpret subtle elements in music lend a stamp of authority to her presentation. A prolific composer and an ardent guru, Alkaji is a holistic practitioner of Hindustani Classical Music. At present, she trains talented students from all over the country and USA, in a rigorous Gurukul tradition.

Padmashree Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri

Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is a living legend of the tabla, who initially caught the ears of sarod great Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. By the age of ten, he was accompanying the Ustad to the pioneering Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in California, helping with lesson demonstrations. Hindustani music’s inescapable call beckoned, and he commenced a masters’ degree in it before launching into a stellar career, quickly turning the heads of senior artists and soon becoming the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music’s first director of percussion. He has accompanied several generations of top musicians, energetically committing himself to a performance schedule that would exhaust musicians half his age (once he accompanied eight top artists in 24 hours, including Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi). Alongside classical performance he has worked with artists including Stevie Wonder, Larry Coryell, and Kayhan Kalhor. Today, a two time Grammy nominee, it was Swapanji's beloved parents, through their own passion for music, who initiated his formal musical training and inspired him in the field of Tabla, paving the path that would eventually lead him to virtuosity.
